Food Label Checker

Type the barcode from any packet. Get the numbers that matter, plus the two ratings the front of the pack never shows: Nutri-Score and how ultra-processed it really is.

Data: Open Food Facts, a community database of 4+ million products with strong Irish and UK coverage. Product missing? It happens with fresh deli items; packaged goods are usually there.

How do I check what's really in a food product?

Type or scan the barcode from the packet into the box above. You get calories, protein, carbs, sugar and fat per 100g, plus the product's Nutri-Score grade and its NOVA processing level, all pulled from Open Food Facts — a community database of over 4 million products. No account, nothing to install, and it works the same on your phone standing in the aisle.

How do I tell if "high protein" on the front is real?

Use the benchmark I use myself: 10g of protein per 100 calories. The checker gives you both numbers per 100g, so divide the protein by the calories and multiply by 100. Clear 10g and it is genuinely a high-protein food. Chicken breast, tinned tuna and 0% skyr clear it comfortably. Most protein bars and protein puddings do not, because the extra protein arrives with extra calories, and in a deficit that is the whole thing that matters. It is one sum, it takes five seconds standing in the aisle, and it is more honest than anything printed on the packet.

What is a NOVA rating?

NOVA groups food by processing level: 1 is unprocessed or minimal (oats, milk, chicken), 2 is processed culinary ingredients (butter, oil), 3 is processed (cheese, bread), 4 is ultra-processed (soft drinks, confectionery, most ready meals). "High protein" on the front means nothing if the packet is a NOVA 4 sugar delivery system.

What is Nutri-Score?

A front-of-pack grade from A (best) to E used across Europe, scoring energy, sugar, saturated fat, salt, fibre and protein per 100g. Not perfect, but a fast comparison between two products on the same shelf.

Want to compare portions rather than scan one barcode? The Protein Swap Lab compares foods for the same protein or calories, using source labels you can check.

Is the Food Label Checker really free?

Yes. No account, no ads, no premium tier, no email box to get past. It is part of the free toolkit here alongside a full food tracker, the calculators and the training guides — none of it costs anything.
